How we calculate the comparison

For financing or an owned-outright car: economic cost = cash paid during the selected period + starting equity − projected ending equity. This includes estimated depreciation, loan interest, tax and fees and any difference between an estimated private-sale value and dealer trade offer. Loan balances use simplified monthly amortization from the entered payoff, which may include accrued interest or fees and therefore differ from your exact remaining principal. Trade cash outflow includes the applied down payment and any surplus trade proceeds returned in cash.

It is not the same as cash spent. The selling option uses actual net sale proceeds and your alternative transportation estimate; it does not assume you can live without a car. We do not predict actual used-car prices, repairs, rates or taxes. Depreciation assumes the annual percentage you entered. Cash spent totals exclude opportunity costs and costs you have not entered.
